Zircon

Zircon (zirconium silicate) should not be confused with the fake diamond material cubic zirconium (zirconium oxide). Zircon is a birthstone for the month of December and also an alternate birthstone for the zodiac sign Virgo. The word zircon is believed to come from the Persian word 'zargun' which translates to 'gold colored'. Middle age legend said that zircon could bring prosperity, aid sleep, and promote honor and wisdom in whomever wore it. Zircon tends to be a rare gem to find as it is typically not found in large crystals that are clean enough to cut which creates a demand for clean cut gems. Zircon has a hardness of 7.5 out of 10 on the Mohs' Scale of mineral hardness.
